Who is Alliance Software?

Alliance Software is a custom software and technology company, based in Melbourne, with a team of professionals working remotely and spread across the east coast of Australia. We design, build and manage custom web and mobile applications for mid-tier corporates and start-ups, often helping companies without a technical culture become software-centric. Our work is conducted in small teams of 2-3 developers, with a product owner and in-house testing and design, working with Agile and Lean principles, although we aren’t hardcore adherents to any particular methodology - the right tool for the job. The vast majority of our work is done in Python/Django and Javascript/React - we do sometimes work outside these languages, but any project we start from scratch will be in these languages/frameworks. We have an internally developed set of tools to get building as quickly as possible without dealing with the boring setup stuff. We’re a primarily remote company, but we gather in our Melbourne office once a month to share food and each other’s company.

Why would you want this job?

Meaningful Work - One of our main rules is to build valuable stuff. The things we build for our customers really matter to them, and it’s not busywork. The work you’ll engage in has a client who really wants it.

Variety - Our projects span diverse industries and sizes and shapes of company, so there’s a lot of variety and new challenges to meet over time.

A Fun Size - As a ~25 person business, Alliance is big enough to be organised & small enough to be able to learn and adapt quickly. We don’t have the overheads and stuffiness that can come in larger organizations.

Smart Team - Your colleagues are all really sharp people who know their stuff. Working with talented people is enjoyable, and a great way to improve your own skills.

Clear Vision and Values - You’ll know where we’re going, how we plan to get there, and your role in helping us succeed.

Professional Development/Training - We have weekly online staff meetings to update all staff regarding news, tech trends and have some fun. Plus regular tech training to nourish and stretch the talented and curious.

Where is this position based? What do you need to bring?

Our offices are in Nunawading, Melbourne, but we have staff based across Australia. Most staff are remote the majority of the time, but we gather monthly in the office for some quality time. For interstate staff, we fly you in quarterly to share food and good company. To work with us, you need to have Australian, unrestricted, working rights. You need to be able to work Melbourne hours - AEST - and a minimum 4-5 days per week.

What skills will you need to get the job?

We care most about coding skills - not qualifications. The first stage of the application process is completing an online test - let your dev skills tell the story. Our online test is followed up with a live coding test - so please be honest in the online test! A functional, recent knowledge of web development is vital - understanding how a web application is served, how a form interacts with a database and similar are major parts of our work. Most of our staff are with us for a long time, so while familiarity with our tech stack helps, we're happy to invest the time required to bring great developers up to speed. You can work well without supervision but also form an active part of a team. You're keen to learn and have the patience to teach others. When you hit roadblocks you communicate early. Python/Django and Javascript/React are our default stack, so both would be nice. But as long as you've got one of these, great coding skills & very solid web experience, we're happy to teach the rest. Niceness - No jerks please.

What don't current staff like?

The biggest gripe is the need to fill out timecards via an online system. As an agency, we work for clients - this is just one of the necessities to make the whole process work; we try to make it as painless as we can.

What will I get paid?

We value a balanced working life, and try to go the extra mile to make sure that work flexes in the right ways to strike that balance. You can get a higher salary working at a large, soulless consulting machine - if the corporate grind is your thing then best of luck - it’s not what we’re focusing on. Our goal is to pay a good salary but have a great environment - that may not be your thing, and that’s okay. Senior applicants - $120K - 140K typical package. $120,000 base + super. Mid tier applicants - $115K to 125K typical package. $105,000 - $115,000 base + super.

Paid overtime? Yes, but it’s not mandatory

We believe it's only fair to be paid for the effort you put in. You'll be expected to work an agreed minimum number of productive hours per day (typically 7.5). If you work more than your target, averaged across a fortnight, then the additional is paid as overtime automatically.

Diversity is important (to us, but also in general!)

Women are underrepresented in the technology sector. If you’re a woman looking for a position in this area, we’d love to hear from you, even if you are worried you might not be a perfect fit. We’re committed to growing female representation in our industry.
