Developer for a Plant Virus Database (m/f/d)

The Leibniz Institute DSMZ-German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures GmbH, Braunschweig offers the position for a Developer for a Plant Virus Database (m/f/d). The position has a salary level up to TV-L 13 according to the qualification. The position is offered as full time (39.8 hours per week) and is initially limited to 3 years. Starting date will be as soon as possible.

The position:

We are seeking a talented developer to join our interdisciplinary Data Integration team (https://hub.dsmz.de/#/team). You will play a pivotal role in designing and implementing a state-of-the-art plant virus database, leveraging existing datasets and integrating diverse biological data types. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about both biology and technology to develop a resource that will be used by hundreds of researchers every day. This will happen in close collaboration with domain experts at the DSMZ and with a fast-growing group of other developers and scientists working in the database development within the DSMZ Digital Diversity endeavor.

Responsibilities:

  • Utilize expertise in web development, particularly in PHP or Python, to build robust and user-friendly database interfaces and functionalities (backend and frontend)
  • Collaborate closely with the departments for Plant Viruses and Bioinformatics, IT & Databases to develop a comprehensive plant virus database platform
  • Integrate diverse datasets, including images of infection stages, transcriptomics, next-generation sequencing (NGS) data, and experimental protocols, into the database
  • Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with relevant standards and regulations
  • Optimize database performance and troubleshoot technical issues as needed

Your profile:

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field
  • Proficiency in web development using PHP or Python, knowledge of HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript
  • Strong understanding of biological data formats and database development (SQL), knowledge of document-based databases (e.g. MongoDB) is beneficial
  • Experience in object-oriented programming (Python, PHP, Java, C#, C++...), hands-on experience with Python is an asset
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Effective communication and collaboration abilities in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Knowledge of version control systems (Git) is an asset

The position is located in Braunschweig, and is not suitable for fully remote work.

The Leibniz Institute DSMZ-German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures is one of the most comprehensive biological resource centers worldwide.
